The Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation --49 CFR Part 40-- defines the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) as a person who evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations when the employees work in safety-sensitive occupations. The individual must follow the DOT process in order to return to safety-sensitive duties. In order to be a SAP, a person needs to have certain credentials, possess specific knowledge, and achieve a passing score on an examination.
The SAP advocates for neither the employer nor the employee. Their function is to protect public interest in safety by professionally evaluating and recommending appropriate education and/or treatment, follow-up tests, and aftercare.
As a SAP, Maria is in compliance with the above requirements and has been conducting DOT evaluations since March 17, 2004. Maria is a registered nurse, an internationally certified alcohol and drug counselor and state licensed evaluator. She is fluent in English and Spanish and keeps updated with the most recent guidelines set by the DOT.
Most appointments can be scheduled within 24 hours for DOT/SAP evaluations. Written report with recommendations within 24 hours.
