Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)The Department of Transportation (DOT) regulation --49 CFR Part 40-- defines the Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) as a person who evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations when the employees work in safety-sensitive occupations. The individual must follow the DOT process in order to return to safety-sensitive duties. A qualified SAP, must have certain credentials, possess specific knowledge, and achieve a passing score on an examination and be updated with continuing education. DOT rules and regulations cover the following agency employees: Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration(FMCSA), Federal Transit Administration(FTA), Federal Railroad Administration(FRA), Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), and United States Coast Guard(USCG). The SAP advocates for neither the employer nor the employee. Their function is to protect public interest in safety by professionally evaluating and recommending appropriate education and/or treatment, follow-up tests, and aftercare. As a SAP, Maria is in compliance with the above requirements and has been conducting DOT evaluations since March 17, 2004. Maria is a registered nurse, an internationally certified alcohol and drug counselor and state licensed DUI evaluator. She is fluent in English and Spanish and keeps updated with the most recent guidelines set by the DOT. Most appointments can be scheduled within 24 hours for DOT/SAP evaluations.
